Barnstaple 0-51 Lydney

LYDNEY showed why they are top of the table and Barnstaple are meandering around in mid-table with a clinical display to win 51-0 at Pottington.

This was Barum’s heaviest losing margin of the season, eclipsing the 55-10 reversal at Bracknell last month and their first lock out of the campaign.

In fact it was Barum’s worst defeat since losing 72-17 to London Irish Amateurs a year ago to the day.

And it was the first time since an 8-0 loss to Taunton in January 2008 that Barnstaple had failed to score in a league game.

Other than in the tight where they had parity with the leaders, Barnstaple were second best just about everywhere.

They are still without play-maker Steve Perry at stand-off due to injury and skipper Ryan Carter in the backline, which didn’t help them.

Lydney knew where points came from and when they got into the final third of the field inevitably they banked something

Two Tony Wicks penalties got Lydney going then he converted a try on the run for wingman Josh Hannam.

Charlie Vine was next over and almost had a second before Linford Brock brought him down. The ball came back to flanker Adam Wheeler, who crashed over.

Sam Arnott took the score to 30-0 at the break with the bonus-point try.

There were three more tries in the second half, all converted by Wicks.

Prop Steve Price got one and Hannam crossed twice to complete his hat-trick.

Barum had their moments – Brock and Will Topps going close – but it wasn’t their day.

Barum are away to Old Patesians this Saturday.
