BARNSTAPLE beat Chippenham 25-12 to win for the first time in three starts and were never seriously threatened while wrapping up the game in the second half.

Chippenham led briefly thanks to score on the run for wingman Aminiasi Totoko in the first few minutes, which Henry Taylor converted.

Josh Squire checked the lead with a penalty then converted after Will Topps put Winston James over for a try.

Barum’s 10-7 lead at the break was soon extended when Linford Brock dashed up the tramlines to score on the end of a handling move. Squire didn’t convert, but did pop over a penalty for 18-5 with 55 minutes gone.

It stayed that way until five minutes from time when Luke Berry’s chip was run down by Brock for a second try Squire converted.

Chippenham had the last word with a try from lock Sam Hill.

Kevin Squire, Barnstaple’s director of rugby, said it has been necessary to play a waiting game.

“In the second half we had the wind and the rain behind us and were determined to take every advantage we could from that,” said Squire. “As Chippenham’s big pack tired on a heavy pitch we were able to get ahead.Although it was hard work we played out of our skins and got a great result to set us up for Exmouth this Saturday.”

l BIDEFORD’S home game against Kingsbridge was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

They will be hoping for better luck with the weather when they travel to Okehampton for a Western Counties top-of-the-table clash this Saturday.

Bideford Nomads lost 44-19 at Tiverton, where the were handicapped for much of the game by playing a man short due to injury.

Battle they did, led by the irrepressible Chris Bailey, and although finally losing, they scored three cracking tries, two within 10 minutes of the re-start and the final score on the whistle.

Darren Peacock crossed for his debut try before a flying break from the lively Shaun Woodhead claimed the second, which he also converted.

Woodhead added the extras before slotting the final conversion with a beautiful strike from the touch line after a break from half way resulted in a try for centre Troy Hicks.

Jake McLean, pressed into the hooker, position had a fine game and Darren Palmer put in an impressive performance on his return from injury. Each try conceded however came from the overlap and the Nomads rued the lack of numbers that proved to be their downfall.

l TORRINGTON dipped to a narrow 14-12 defeat against Crediton’s second string.

The home side, who fielded a mixture of first team regulars and emerging talent, took the lead through a try from Craig Hooper following a great break from fly-half Nick Evans.

Evans added the conversion, but Crediton levelled the score before the break with a converted try.

Evans got the hosts back in front with a brilliant solo effort from the half way line, although after finishing off in the corner he left himself too much work to do with the conversion.

Another converted try saw the visitors go in front, although that should have changed five minutes from the end when Torrington were awarded a penalty kick in front of the posts.

Blaine Quinlan’s decision to kick for the corner instead of taking the points proved costly as the visitors went on to close out the game and take the win.

Torrington make the short trip to South Molton this Saturday.

Ilfracombe, who has no game in Devon Two last Saturday, are at home to Devonport High School Old Boys.

l BARNSTAPLE Colts hit the top of the table in the Colts North Merit Table following a 36-10 bonus point win over Crediton.

Barum look odds-on now for a place in the top-eight cup league which starts after Christmas.
