Two tries from Jordan Petherbridge helped Barnstaple to a much-needed 24-7 win over visiting Canterbury.

Barum had gone five games without a win in National League Two South and the bottom of the table was creeping up behind them.

Barnstaple are no better off than they were before the latest round of fixtures – in fact they are a point closer – 11 not 12 - to the relegation places than they were before.

Old Reds are the side in the third relegation place and they took maximum points from a 34-0 win over fellow strugglers Clifton.

Barum have moved one place up the table though as they passed London Irish Amateurs, who lost to Tonbridge Juddians.

A win at Clifton this Saturday will put some more distance between Barum and the wrong end of the table.

Gwyn Parks dropped a goal to put Barum ahead on 11 minutes. They were never behind in the match after that.

Petherbridge added a try on 22 minutes while Canterbury were down to 14 men with prop Aaron Cooper in the sin bin.

Canterbury got back within a point when Dan Smart converted his own try on 34 minutes.

A second try for Petherbridge had Barum 13-7 up at the interval.

Parks stretched the lead with a couple of penalties. The key try was one run in by Will Topps that put Barum 24-7 up with the last quarter well advanced.
