Barnstaple 18-14 Brixham

BARNSTAPLE banished their Devon derby blues by beating Brixham 18-14 at Pottington Road.

Barum were never behind after taking an eighth-minute lead and although Brixham did draw level for a while that was as good as it got.

Luke Berry was the man of the moment for Barum with 13 of their 18 points, starting with the opening try created by Will Topps and converted himself.

Topps, filling in at stand-off for the injured Steve Perry, was later named Barum’s man of the match.

Brixham levelled while Barum were a man down with Matt Gohl in the sin-bin when No.8 Sam Simmonds broke from the retreating remains of a scrum to score round the corner. Ben Lovell converted.

Five minutes before half time Brixham bent the offside line to far for referee josh Chapman’s liking and Berry knocked over the three-pointer for a 10-7 lead.

The game was won and lost during a 10-minute spell after the interval when Berry kicked another penalty and flanker Winston James taking an offload then dashing over for a try.

Back came Barum with a second try from Simmonds, again scored from the back of a scrum and converted by Lovell.

Brixham prop Ryan Hopkins headed to the bin in the last 10 minutes for dropping a maul, but the Fishermen carried on attacking.

Barum supporters were biting their nails when Brixham opted for a scrum in the last minute, the visitors hoping Simmonds would go over again.

Instead the referee spotted an infringement up front by Brixham and Barum booted the ball into touch to bring the final blast on the whistle.

Barum are at home again this Saturday when they entertain runaway divisional leaders Lydney.
