BARNSTAPLE Rugby Club’s under 15s will feel they have the edge heading into their Devon Plate final after expert coaching from a pair of Exeter Chiefs players.

The Exeter and Barnstaple branches of RGB Building Supplies arranged for Aviva Premiership players Damian Welch and Will Chudley to work with the boys on their tackling, passing and ruck-work ahead of the plate final on April 27.

The Chiefs duo also passed on a few pearls of wisdom, including the importance of team communication on the field.

The training was followed up by a question and answer session with the players.

Martin Southworth, Head Coach of Barnstaple U15s, was delighted that the team had the experience.

“I can’t thank RGB and the Exeter Chiefs enough for giving our team this unique opportunity to train with some of the country’s finest rugby players,” he said. “The experience they brought and the help they gave us has been invaluable to our team.

“To stay on afterwards and patiently answer all the questions we had gave us a great insight into the life of a professional rugby player.

“Damian Welch and Will Chudley are a credit to Exeter Chiefs and were an inspiration to us.”

RGB Barnstaple branch manager Russell Jenkins said: “We have a history of supporting the rugby club and like to be able to help out groups in the local community.

“As we have a connection with the Exeter Chiefs, we thought it would be a great opportunity for the boys to be able to get some expert coaching to help them prepare for the Devon Plate final.”
