Newton Abbot 25-17 Barnstaple

BARNSTAPLE will be looking to bounce back from their 25-17 defeat at Newton Abbot when they entertain Old Redcliffians this Saturday.

Barum were 10-0 up in no time at all and from that vantage point would have expected to go on and win.

Jake Nash, who arrived at Pottinton mid-season from Okehampton, got Barum’s first try. Luke Berry converted from dead ahead then landed a penalty.

Newton chipped away at the league with former Barum youngster Laurence May slotting a penalty then converting a Colin Stewart try.

Martin Browne’s try just before half time put Newton ahead and there they stayed.

Browne’s game came to an early end when referee Sara Cox sent him off for a dangerous tackle.

Newton seemed inspired by going a man down and went further ahead with a Craig Dennis try. May converted.

May opened up a two-score lead with a subsequent penalty.

Barum had the last word when lock Matt Gohl stretched for the line on the end of a short-range drive. Berry converted.
