Barum beat league newcomers on opening day

Jordan Petherbridge led Barnstaple’s points parade as they sent National League Two South new boys Wimbledon crashing to a 33-13 defeat on the season’s opening day.

The lead changed hands several times in the first half before Barnstaple got in front at 12-10.

Once in the lead there was no stopping Barnstaple, who were 19-10 up at the break and shot clear in the second half.

Petherbridge had a busy first half, converting tries by Nat Bayet and Will Topps, but missing one scored by Winston James.

The second half started with a Wimbledon penalty to make it 19-13, but that was as close as they got.

Petherbridge converted his own try on 50 minutes – and repeated the feat on 64 minutes to put the result beyond any doubt.

Barnstaple can expect a tougher game this Saturday when Redruth visit Pottington, fresh from demolishing Old Reds 58-10 in their first game.

Kick-off is at 2.30pm.
