North Devon clubs have to wait for final stages of National championships after RNLI rescue
This season’s final big gig rowing event couldn’t be completed at the weekend after a gig capsized in the second-to-last race at Newquay.
The men’s National Gig Rowing Championships were postponed when Fowey gig club’s Lantic boat needed to be rescued by the RNLI, meaning that the four North Devon clubs at the event, all of whom performed brilliantly in the first round heats, will have to wait until September 28 to re-race.
Torridge, Barnstaple and Appledore all raced well in tricky conditions to put good times on the board in the second round heats, but Ilfracombe, who were due to compete in the final race of the day, didn’t get the chance to lay down a time after the rescue.
The three crews who did post times will now have to wait to hear from the Cornish Pilot Gig Association to find out if they have done enough to reach the quarter-finals when the championships resume on September 28.
