The Robins let a one-goal lead slip at the Sports Ground this afternoon to draw 1-1

Bideford were forced to settle for a point against play-off bound Evesham United in the Southern League this afternoon (Saturday).

The Robins drew 1-1 against their Worcestershire counterparts at the Sports Ground.

Ben Watson had given Bideford the lead after 19 minutes, but a freak deflected shot from Lewis Binns put the visitors back on terms.

For Bideford manager Sean Joyce, he was ‘disappointed’ his side hadn’t won the game.

“I thought we were the better team by far in the first half,” he said.

“We had three or four good chances, and it just sums the season up because we couldn’t score.

“It was a pub goal, a sloppy goal to concede. “Joe should have done better with it, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt because it’s taken a deflection off Macca.

“I felt deflated for the lads after that because I thought in that half we were totally dominant. We had a game plan and we set it up.

“In the second half, again I thought we edged it and were the better team and limited them to very few goalscoring opportunities.”

Watson’s left footed finish after 19 minutes came after plenty of pressure from the Robins.

After what seemed to be a relatively comfortable half for the Robins, they found themselves sucker-punched by an equaliser.

Binns’ shot from the edge of the penalty area took a deflection off Chris McGrath, which in turn wrong-footed Joe Moore enough for the ball to roll just beyond him.

The game opened up a bit more in the second-half and the Robins had plenty of opportunities to re-take the lead.

Watson and Ben Wood both fired shots wide, as did Sean Downing at the end of a lovely move which saw him turn and flick the ball before drilling the ball past the far post.

Evesham nearly got a late winner with three minutes remaining when Matt Andrew was dispossessed in the middle of the park.

Jordan Bryan pinched the ball and ran through on goal only to blast his shot over the bar.
