15 schools, 23 races: Park Community School Barnstaple’s Olympic Legacy event 2014

STICKLEPATH came out on top as all of Barnstaple’s primary schools came together for Park School’s Olympic legacy event.

One of the major points of the London 2012 Olympic legacy is to encourage participation in school sports, and last week’s event certainly did its bit to make that a reality, with children of all age groups taking part in a series of races.

To mark the original modern Olympic Games, the first races of the schools’ programme were two separate mini marathon races for girls and boys, followed by mixed four-person relay races for each of the different age groups, ending with a final series of mixed age races.

As with the first event in 2012, Councillor Frank Biederman – an Olympic Torch relay runner in 2012 - brought his Olympic torch to the event so pupils and spectators could see it and have their photograph taken with it.

This year’s event was supported and sponsored by the North Devon Sports Foundation and Barnstaple Town Council.

All of the participants received certificates, with representatives of the top three schools taking home medals.

After 23 eagerly contested races, Sticklepath School pipped Landkey School to the gold medal by a single point, with Bishops Tawton School’s athletes collecting the bronze medal for third place.
