Ilfracombe Town have moved quickly to replace the injured James Mayne, who has suffered a broken cheek bone, by snapping up the versatile Stan Paxton.
Paxton has been a regular on the Barnstaple team sheet for a number of years, but started this season with Western League rivals Willand Rovers before moving to Evostik Southern Division side Bridgwater Town.
Ilfracombe manager Ross Middleton said: “It’s a great signing for us. I played alongside Stan with Barnstaple, so I know how much potential he has. He’s exactly the kind of player we look for at the club, a young local lad with bags of talent. He can play anywhere on the pitch. We’ve got a lot of fixtures to get through, so with Shaun Lewis and Tom Rossiter not being available every week I felt we needed another striker. Of course, with Mayner getting injured, it’s also a bonus that Stan has a lot of experience playing at the back, so can fill in if needed.’
Ilfracombe’s game away to Wells City was called off because of waterlogged pitch. Their schdeuled match at home to Bridport last night (Tuesday) was also postponed. Next match is away to Melksham on Saturday.
