North Devon cricketer gets first senior chance
Northam’s Jamie Overton has been called up to the England Lions squad for their three game one-day series with Bangladesh A later this month.
The 19-year-old Somerset paceman has impressed in the County Championship and in one-day cricket this season and is one of three debutants in the 12-man squad.
Overton, Northants’ David Willey and Sussex’s Chris Jordan all get their first call-up to the senior set-up after coming through the Potential England Performance Programme (PEPP), and will be captained by experienced all-rounder Luke Wright.
Overton was tipped by Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick to represent England in the near future and his call up to the Lions squad will not be a surprise to the great England opener, especially given that two of the three matches will be played at Somerset’s Taunton home ground.
The teenage fast bowler was also involved in England’s under-19 world cup squad last year.
National Selector Geoff Miller said: “Looking further ahead, we are also keen to build a strong platform for the 2015 World Cup, so opportunities such as this play a big part in giving the coaches an opportunity to assess the levels of these players first hand.”
The series kicks off on August 20 at the County Ground, Bristol.
