This week’s netball round-up

VENNERS Bakery Vipers and Carol Anne Trolls finished their winter season with impressive performances in division one of the North Devon Netball League.

Vipers challenged Carol Anne Diamonds and although they couldn’t quite eek out a win, they were well in the game for 55 minutes.

The match was far closer than Diamonds had expected and defensive duo Lizzy Hanner and Beth Nancekivell kept Diamonds’ score below 40 for only the second time this season.

Kelly Hawkings was once again superb in the mid-court for Diamonds and teamed up well with Roxsamme Brand, whose positioning and shooting ensured Diamonds picked up an 11th victory of the season.

Carol Anne Trolls started strongly and maintained their pace throughout as they beat Frank Heard’s Heffers 52-34.

Rebecca Manley led Titans Apollo to a relatively easy victory over club mates Neptune, but they didn’t have it all their own way with Nicole Lathwell and Hannah Little making it difficult for them.

In division two, Titans Pluto defeated Titans Jupiter to make the title race even closer.

The two Titans sides and Bude Stars are still in the hunt and the final two games will be crucial.

The shooting by Millie White and Georgia Morris made the difference for Pluto, although Rachel Bater’s defence was influential for Jupiter.

Carol Anne Emeralds beat Instant Images Embroidery in a match where the shooters stood out. Emeralds’ Charlotte Mock and Images’ Paula Fuller were outstanding and fully deserved the player of the match plaudits.

The defensive unit of Catherine Mitcham and Lizzie Nicholas was yet again superb when Venners Bakery Anacondas faced Reeds Silverside.

Lizzie stepped up against her aunt but showed there would be no family favouritism as she and Catherine made countless interceptions.

Georgeham Rocks continued their new-found form to defeat Bude Satellites 38-26 in division three.

Both teams made errors at times and demonstrated fluid play at others but Georgeham managed more of the latter. Olivia Bickle picked up plenty of balls in defence and the shooters were accurate.

Bude’s Gemma Denham set up much of their attack and linked well with their shooters to be named as their best player.

Louise Tolley denied Carol Anne Golds attack space as she led Coodes Cougars to victory. Rosie Dymond played another different position for Golds and was influential but Coodes had the edge with their height and experience.

The second half of division four finished this week with victories for Venners Bakery Jumping Japs and Carol Anne Amethysts.

All of the teams needed new players having lost a few to holidays but they gelled quickly to make the matches competitive.

Emily Hughes showed her athleticism for Jumping Japs as they surpassed Carol Anne Jets despite great defending from Kajal Bailey.

Carol Anne Amethysts took on Venners Dodging Donuts and Yvonne Kneller was yet again fantastic in attack and also read the game well to win interceptions.
