Bideford boxer claims title with win over Augustnick

BIDEFORD ABC’s Jack Langford has become North Devon’s first Senior ABA Western Counties champion in more than 20 years.

Langford won the match against a defiant former four nations champion Pawel Augustnick from Hamilton Greens ABC in Taunton.

The Bideford boxer made the journey up to Devizes to challenge Augustnick for the title. The Bideford man came out in his usual stylish fashion with a big work rate behind a strong jab and fast combinations to affect his opponent in a dominant first round.

The second round was more evenly contested as Augustnick tried stalking Langford, throwing in big hooks.

But Langford hit back and proved he could fight fire with fire to match his opponent’s strength and ended the round on top.

Augustnick had faded by the time they got to the third. He had thrown everything at Langford, but each time he landed one shot, he got hit back with a strong combination from Langford.

Fatigue seemed to kick in for Augustnick as Langford battled him in the last round, landing his wicked right hand again to stun Augustnick just before the bell.

The anticipation of a Langford victory was justified when he took a points victory and the Middleweight title.

He will now move on to the pre-quarters on April 19.

Tyler Thake showed true winning spirit in his match as he gave everything in his fight with Alex Loewy of Torbay in his home show.

Thake has been on the wrong end of a few decisions while boxing away recently but it was never in doubt this time. He showed non-stop work rate for the whole three rounds landing harsh straight punches.

By the third round his strength and stamina were too much for his opponent as he came in with combinations to the body and head to take a points victory.
