Great Britain’s most promising judoka descended on the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield this weekend for the British Championships for Pre-Cadets and Cadets – including a number of youngsters from Kingsley’s judo team.

For the first time the club took a younger team – credit to the pre-cadet 12 & 13 year-old Judoka who have produced great results throughout the season and deserved their selection to compete at a national level.

Year 7 Cameron Lavelle competed in the under 42 kilo division, in his first event since moving up from the under 12s, and won his first bout before narrowly losing out to eventual silver medallist Patrick Barnes. Cameron then defeated James Plummer with a great throw to score an Ippon 10pts knockout victory, and moved into the crossover rounds for a possible bronze medal. Cameron eventually lost out to Charles Cuthbert from Scotland in the next round, but it was a very promising performance from him, showing great maturity to compete and raise his normal level to finish 12th overall.

Louis Hughes fought in the pre-cadet under 55 kg category, losing his first bout before being defeated by Lachian Moorhead in the bronze medal rounds.

New Kingsley member Mark Wild produced the most skillful display to reach the semi-final, but was unlucky to narrowly lose out.

Mark then had to fight Terry Venables for the bronze medal, but he found it hard to re-focus and eventually lost and had to settle for fifth place overall in the pre-cadet 34kg class.

This is still a fine achievement, as Mark has only just moved into this age group and has plenty of time to improve before the new season.

Chris Edwards fought in the -66kg Cadets 14 to 16 year-old group, winning two out of four bouts and producing some great Judo, but failing to pick up a medal.
