DAY one of the 7th North Devon Junior Badminton Tournament saw the under-13s and under-17s take to the courts.

Frances Penny from Berkshire, ranked 86 in the country, won the U17 girls’ open singles by beating Kellen Moore from Cornwall 21-14, 21-11. Moore was also runner up in the doubles with Vicky Prouse (Devon) to winners Hannah Down and Lauren Theedom, both from Devon. Down then teamed up with her county team mate Alistair Prades to beat Moore and her county team mate Vinodh Arumugam 21-19 in the mixed final.

William Painter from Wales beat Jake Brazewell from Cornwall 21-17, 21-17 in the U17 boys singles and teamed up with Andrew Jones of Wiltshire to beat Jake Brazewell and Vinodh Arumugam 21-19 in the doubles.

Devon’s Lloyd Skinner beat his doubles partner Alex Moir 21-17,21-15 to take the U13 boys’ singles title. They then went on to claim the doubles from the Devon pairing of Daniel Conway and Owen Waters by one point.

Lauren Cole from Devon edged out Bronya Pike 17–21, 21-15 in the U13 girls’ singles and won the doubles with county team mate Emily Killoran.

The novice events brought success for Chulmleigh players,.

Sam Clark beat Harry Gardner from Somerset 21-16, 21-14 in the U13 boys’ singles final and then won the two doubles. He joined clubmate Charlie Wilde to win the boys’ doubles from Harry Gardner and Rory Shafford from Dorest and won the mixed event with clubmate Leoni Bishop, beating fellow Chulmleigh players Matthew Symonds and Amy Holland. Amy won the girls’ singles, beating Bethy Gibb from Bideford 21-11, 21-13 and with Leoni Bishop won the girls’ doubles from Leanne York (Torbay) and Ellie Holland (Devon).

Barnstaple pair James Binmore and Max Ellis triumphed in the boys’ doubles by two points from Jacob McCowen-Smith and Sean Farr, also from Barnstaple.

This Saturday sees the U11s and U15s do battle at the North Devon Leisure Centre.
