Ilfracombe Town 1-2 Street
Ilfracombe will feel a tad unlucky to come away with nothing from their game with a physical and experienced Street side on Tuesday night.
Combe had even more players on the treatment table with Jon Vooght and Stan Paxton joining the ever-increasing list of unavailable players. Both players were unable to shake off groin strains picked up on Saturday.
This has left manager Ross Middleton with little choice but to sign on more cover in young defender Nathan Broome, who joined the club this week from Tiverton Town.
There was nothing between the teams all night. Frank Paxton put the Bluebirds in front after a great header back across goal from Gary Skinner but Street replied almost immediately when Mark Salter made no mistake from 12 yards.
A worrying sign for Ilfracombe was Frank Paxton having to come off with what looks like a hamstring strain and could mean another player having a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Street found a winner in somewhat fortuitous circumstances against the run of play. Lewis Ovey, who had another solid game at the heart of the defence, leapt highest to clear a cross but the ball somehow span off his head and went backwards into the top corner of his own net. It was a harsh blow for Combe.
The game was always on the edge of turning ugly when the referee awarded Street a contentious penalty. Kurtis Parkin continued his fine form by keeping out the spot kick.
“Ovey wouldn’t be able to do that again if he tried a million time,” said Middleton.
“It was a freak goal, but he was tremendous again tonight. He’s been apologising to all the lads but he has nothing to apologise for.”
“I’m disappointed of course. A draw would have been a fair result, the lads worked their socks off and deserved more.
“The ref didn’t help - he was disappointing on the night. He missed so much it was frightening, there was some terrible tackles he let go and the penalty decision was laughable.”
Combe will be looking for a quick response as they travel to Plymouth Parkway on Saturday in the F.A. Cup Preliminary Round. Middleton will be hoping for some good news on the injury front with the likes of Stan Paxton, Leeroy Cochran, Josh Heafield all hoping to be available to freshen up his young squad.
There’s a bus travelling to the game on Saturday. Please contact the club through their webstire for more: www.clubwebsite.co.uk/ilfracombetownafc.
