St Austell 1-4 Ilfracombe Town
Ilfracombe Town put in a great display to progress in the FA Cup with a 4-1 win away at one of the Peninsula league favourites St Austell.
After playing positive football without reward in their two league defeats, Combe were undeterred and dominated possession. They creating a number of early chances before taking a deserved lead on 15 minutes when Ian Cockwill smashed in his first goal for the club.
Steve Holland terrorised the home defence all afternoon with his direct running and when he skipped past ex-professional Lee Hodges he made no mistake in firing a shot into the bottom corner with a great finish to give the Bluebirds a 2-0 half-time lead.
St Austell clearly got a ticking off at half-time, but it was Combe who extended their lead when Stan Paxton raced clear and finished expertly after rounding the keeper.
Ilfracombe’s back four of Cockwill, Craig Allan, Karl Baggeley and Jon Vooght defended brilliantly all afternoon but were opened up on one occasion when Chris Reski – who may have been sent off earlier for a poor challenge on Kane Dryden - squared to Daniel Nancarrow to finish well.
Combe came on strong again and broke away on a number of occasions before Edd Yeo finished the game off with a long-range strike.
“It’s a huge confidence boost for the boys and the club,” said manager Ross Middleton.
“The lads have played some brilliant football in the first two games of the season but not got the rewards, especially in the first halves.
“I asked the lads to be hard to beat today and defensively we were superb. We’ve got goals all over the team so I’m chuffed a few have got off the mark, it could have easily been more but I’m just happy for the players and the club today.”
Ilfracombe now welcome Willand Rovers for a derby game in the St Luke’s Bowl on Tuesday night, 7.45pm kick off.
