ILFRACOMBE picked up a great result at this season’s second regatta, winning the overall trophy at Dartmouth.

The ladies got them off to a decent start, with the B crew coming sixth despite getting caught up early on and the A crew finishing a comfortable third in their race.

The men’s B crew flew out of the blocks and secured second after a thrilling duel with Cattewater, finishing 30 seconds clear of of the rest of the field.

Ilfracombe men’s A knew they would be in for a tough race, going head to head with the world number two crew.

They got off to a good start and were neck and neck with Caradon for a long time, until Ilfracombe got their noses in front and sprinted clear after the final turn to earn a terrific victory.

They became only the second crew ever from outside of Cornwall to win the race, and look in good shape for the world championships in May.

In the veterans’ races, the ladies got themselves into the lead group and eventually picked up a fine second place, while the men came home in third.

The mixed race followed, which Ilfracombe dominated, winning by more than 10 seconds with a powerful performance.

The wins were enough to pick up the overall regatta trophy, beating off competition from nine other clubs.

Appledore were also in attendance, and showed that the club’s future looks bright.

17-year-olds Izzy Hastie and Rory McLean played significant roles at their debut senior regatta, with Izzy rowing at no.1 in bow as the ladies C crew took 1st place several boat lengths ahead of their closest rivals Cattewater.

Rory rowed in stroke-side in no.6 for the men’s C crew to as they claimed second place after a closely fought race with Salcombe.

The men’s and ladies’ A, B, Vets and mixed teams had mixed fortunes on the day, as crews tested their competitive strengths and techniques in their first regatta of the season.

Club members headed home to the North Coast with heads held high, having secured fifth place overall, determined to focus on improving for the world championships in the Scilly Isles in May.
