WHILE the weather decimated the weekend football programme and only a handful of matches were played across the leagues, Wrey Arms celebrated not only their first league game since late November, but two matches in two days – and two victories!
Facing a serious backlog of fixtures, including county and league cup postponements, Wrey were keen to get on the pitch and were delighted to be able to use the Barnstaple AAC ground for their Combe Martin Cup match with North Molton.
They were even more delighted with the result as they went 2-0 up by the break and then cruised home 7-0.
Jimmy Hill hit a hat-trick, Simon Larcombe two and there were others for Mike Knott and Dan Larcombe.
Then it was back to the Barnstaple AAC ground again on Sunday and a 4-2 Senior Division result over the Ammies Reserves.
There were several changes to the team, but Wrey still had their scoring boots as they went 3-0 up by the break and then 4-0 ahead with two more goals for Simon Larcombe and one each for Joe Gillard and Dan Dayman before the Ammies made a late fightback with goals by Oliver Rigler and Alan Yeo.
The only Premier Division match to escape the conditions saw the Barnstaple AAC first team 3-0 winners in a bottom-of-the-table clash away to Combe Martin.
It was a ‘must win’ match in their efforts to stay in the top division, said Ammies’ Mark Hill. And they did just that in a match in which both sides gave remarkably good performances in Baltic conditions.
The win lifts the Ammies six points clear of Combe at the bottom and they have played five matches fewer.
Aaron Yeo opened the scoring after just two minutes and that is the way it stayed until after half-time.
Ten minutes into the second period Eddie Yeo made it two and 10 minutes from the end Aaron netted his second.
Woolacombe and Merton beat the weather, but could not beat each other as they shared four goals and the points in their Intermediate One match.
Woolacombe struck first with a goal by Chay Isaac after 20 minutes.
Merton lost the services of their free-scoring Nathan Delaune, who was injured in the opening half, but came back to 1-1 at the break with an equaliser by Sam Munday.
Then it was Merton’s turn to go ahead as George Nancekivell picked up on a goal kick that went wrong to strike a second, but Woolacombe came back to level it again with a good build-up that ended with Andy Woodman putting the ball across the goalmouth for Stuart Haynes to slot in.
A close game throughout in freezing conditions.
Braunton Reserves have made progress in the Braunton Cup, with Landkey unable to raise a side for their scheduled Sunday clash and forfeiting the match.
