LOCAL clubs enjoyed terrific success at the 25th World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly last week.

A record 148 boats from across Europe enjoyed the calm conditions on Friday, as the veterans’ races got underway.

Torridge and Ilfracombe went hammer and tongs in the ladies’ race, with both picking up top 10 finishes.

Ilfracombe ended up seventh, while Torridge flew the flag for Devon in fifth.

Ilfracombe’s men also put in a strong performance, crossing the line sixth against a very strong field.

The Ilfracombe PGC men’s A crew achieved the best-ever result for a Devon club by getting into the top 10 in the main racing series.

After going into group B, the men won the group to finish 13th in the world and pick up a podium spot.

The ladies’ A also had great success by getting into the top A group and eventually finishing 14th.

Ilfracombe’s B crews also showed massive improvement on last year’s results, moving up 15 places and taking on other clubs’ A crews.

Torridge had two men’s crews and two ladies’ crews in the main races, with Torridge ladies A finishing 31st out of 141 crews. They fought hard against Appledore A over all four races, with Appledore winning that battle by inches. The second ladies crew finished in 98th after an exciting battle with Barnstaple.

The men’s A crew of Alex Miles, Tom Trapnell, Rhys Hollis, Tom Fenton Hunt, Adam Routley and Terry Bowden, who have only been together for six months, demonstrated their future potential by finishing in 47th place after some exceptional racing against tough opposition. The men’s B finished 104th.

Colin Eastman, coach of Torridge men’s A, said: “this has been a fantastic year for the club with exciting times ahead. The club is looking forward to a brilliant season.”
