The fish were playing ball for the 58 anglers who descended on Putsborough beach on Saturday.
The annual Combe Martin Sea Angling Club Open had ideal conditions and the fish weren’t shy.
Wayne Thomas, of the club and North Devon Sea Angling News, reported Matt Druce took first place with a blonde ray of 11lb 4 ¼oz, while Dale Kiff was second with a small-eyed ray of 7lb 14oz.
Third went to Gareth Pike with a dogfish of 2lb 5oz and fourth to Garry Andrews with another small-eyed of 7lb 1/2oz.
The club would like to thank sponsors Sakuma, High Street Tackle in Ilfracombe, Veals Mail Order and Kevin Legge.
Thanks also go to Putsborough Sands for allowing the use of the venue, as well as all who took part.
Bideford Angling Club’s monthly rover saw thornback ray take the top spots. Antony Smith weighed in a good fish of 9lb 5 ½oz for first as well as another of 8lb 6 ½oz for second. Dick Talbot was third with a smoothound of 9lb 5oz.
The Champion of Champions for the North Devon League is on the weekend of May 20-21, with the weigh-in at the First In Last Out in Bideford on the Sunday at 7.30pm.
Anyone who has recorded a first, second or third in the heats during the season is entered to fish and there is no fee or need to book in.
The AGM will immediately follow the weigh-in. Any anglers are very welcome to enter a team of four in the 2017-18 league, which begins in June – you do not need to belong to a fishing club.
