A good start for Bideford boxer Ricky Dymond

BIDEFORD Boxing Club’s Ricky Dymond made a superb start to the new season against old rival Kyle Gargett from Devonport, who had previously beaten him.

But this time Dymond gave Gargett no chance of getting into the fight. He won the first round convincingly, landing plenty of combinations, and showing great footwork to leave his opponent swinging at thin air. In the second, Dymond showed his skills of how to hit and not get hit, leaving the home lad frustrated. Well ahead going into the last round, he showed great patience and counter punch ability to catch Gargett every time he tried to set up an attack and came home a wide points winner.

His next challenge will be in the NACYP national championships later this month.

Bideford’s Ryan Gumbley gained his third successive win when he faced Zack Jordan of Devonport. The home boxer started off fast, with lightning hand speed and fast feet, but Gumbley’s strong body shots began to wear him down. It was all level going into the last round, but the Bideford boxer showed superior fitness and relentless pressure to gain a points victory.

Super heavyweight Ben Short had a toe to toe battle against a very strong opponent in Brandon Bull from Tylorstown ABC, Wales.

Both boxers dished out punishment and the bout was tight going into the last round. Courageous displays by them both were rewarded with a standing ovation from the packed crowd.

Two of the judges declared the bout a draw and the deciding judge had it one point to Bull.

Bideford newcomer Kye Cook showed he has plenty of potential at just 11 years old. He faced Danny Quinn from Intense ABC in Plymouth. Both showed good, disciplined boxing in a very tidy bout, Quinn winning a tight points decision.
