Major amateur golf tournament coming to North Devon course this week
SAUNTON Golf Club is set to play host for some of the country’s top talent when the English Amateur Championship swings into town this week.
Royal North Devon’s Jimmy Mullen, who narrowly missed out on the Silver Medal for the low amateur at the Open Championship last year, will be among those hunting for glory on the east and west courses of Saunton between July 28-August 2.
Brabazon Trophy winner Ben Stow, of Rushmore GC, Wiltshire, will also be in the field, hoping to become only the third player since 1947 to complete the double.
The first two days will comprise a 36-hole stroke play event across the two courses, with the top 64 players progressing to the knockout match play stage.
All 288 entrants will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of the competition’s previous winners, such as Nick Faldo and Paul Casey.
