Royal North Devon golfer reaches last 16 of US Amateur

ROYAL North Devon’s Open Championship golfer Jimmy Mullen reached the last 16 in last week’s US Amateur Championship.

Mullen was the last British player standing at the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course, eventually won by South Korea’s Gunn Yang.

Out of a field of 320 golfers, Mullen finished seventh in the stroke play qualifying part of the competition, before recording thrilling last-gasp victories over Todd White on the 18th in the round of 64 and Justin Tereshko on the fifth extra hole in the round of 32.

Mullen was eventually beaten by Frederick Wedel, who lost out to champion Yang in the semi-finals.

Despite the defeat, it was still a promising result for the young golfer in his first US Amateur.
