Young Judoka bring several medals home from British Championships

SEVEN Kingsley School Judo Club members joined more than 500 youngsters in action at the 2014 British School Championships at the iceSheffield Arena.

A number of international athletes have been involved in the British Schools’ system on their way to representing Great Britain, including former squad members Winston Gordon, Dennis Stewart, Densign White and Nicola Fairbrother to name but a few.

This year’s results for Kingsley Judoka proved to be the best so far for the team.

Kingsley’s top performance came from Andrew Serdega, who had to work hard to secure his second consecutive title in the u66kg class.

Andrew produced a quality performance, winning all of his contests in style by scoring Ippon in each bout.

He claimed his win in dramatic fashion, applying a strangle hold with just seconds to spare after a tight contest against Liam Mathew from Dalkeith High School.

Youngster Kitty Lavelle won a silver medal, representing Morchard Bishop Primary in the year 6/7 age group.

She started well in her final and produced some strong attacking Judo against Yasmin Hawkins from Southcote Primary School. It was a hard contest for Kitty who overcame her nerves to reach the final, but Yasmin was a little too strong and she eventually held Kitty down to score Ippon.

Kingsley School student Clara Gawlas was competing in her third championships, and after finishing fifth in her previous two attempts she earned a bronze in this year’s u63kg category.

Michael Edwards, who trains with the Kingsley team, won a Bronze medal in the Yr 12/13 group in the under 81 Kilo class.

Kingsley student Cameron Lavelle was making his debut at this level and produced two very confident wins in the Yr 6/7 under 42kg class, finishing a respectable 12th.

Kingsley surpassed their medal target and will be very encouraged by the development of their young fighters.
