One of North Devon’s newest kids’ football clubs is going from strength to strength after a successful first six months.
The Goal Getters started in August, giving children from the ages of two to six years old their first taste of the beautiful game.
With sessions for Tiddly Dribblers, Tiny Tekkers and Sharp Shooters every weekend, the Goal Getters are about learning some of game’s basic skills with no pressure.
Whether they’re dribbling through a valley of volcanoes or hunting for treasure, it’s all about having fun for founder and former Ilfracombe Town manager Ross Middleton.
“Everything we do is pressure free,” said Ross, who still plays locally for Torridgeside and Boca Seniors.
“There are no matches or tackling but they will all be doing stuff with a football, but through games.
“Everything we do works on agility, balance and co-ordination, but the main objective is just to have lots of fun.
“They’ll have a football at their feet for the whole time they are here, but won’t be consciously told that’s what they need to be doing.”
Since being set up by Ross and his wife Heather, Goal Getters has grown quickly in its first six months.
What started with four sessions each weekend has grown to seven across Saturday and Sunday at North Devon Leisure Centre and new Monday sessions that started last week.
It’s also working at local schools to deliver football days for Key Stage One pupils.
“We’re really enjoying it. It’s the best thing I have ever done and the kids seem to be enjoying it too,” said Ross.
“There are lots of other clubs they can go to when they are older, we just want to get them into football and get to know the game.
“We’re really happy where we are now, most groups are full and have a waiting list which is nice, but we would like to get everyone in.
“We want people to come along and be happy, which I think all the kids are.”
