Four Nash touchdowns steer Barum to derby win

JACOB Nash helped himself to four tries as Barnstaple U16s defeated Torrington 67-6 in the North Devon derby.

Nash dummed over from a scrum for the first try, which Jordan Petherbridge converted.

Good handling got the ball to Ethan Paddon who used his pace to touch down in the corner for a 12-0 lead.

Torrington fought back and were awarded a penalty in front of the posts which Sam Freemantle coolly slotted over.

Barnstaple’s Louis Risboro cleared out a ruck superbly to allow quick ball to be sent out to the waiting backs, who ran a training ground move to allow Dom Thorne in under the posts. Petherbridge converted.

More slick handling sent Gareth Sloman in for a great individual score.

Next up came the try of the game as Nash tidied up scrappy line-out ball on halfway and beat five defenders in under the posts for Petherbridge to convert.

Thorne produced another great run to score his second which Petherbridge converted.

After the ball went from left to right at pace, Bob Bendy dived in at the corner to make it 40-0 to Bideford.

Despite going a man down when Barney Meadowcroft was yellow carded, Barnstaple went further ahead with a try from Nash to complete his hat-trick.

Barum fielded the restart and worked it up field through Bradley Drew before more excellent support work by Nash saw him dot down his fourth.

Freemanatle kicked a penalty and briefly the game became an even contest until Barnstaple worked down the pitch to win a penalty in Torrie’s 22 which Petherbridge took quickly and went in under the posts for an easy conversion.

The last try of the game was taken well by Theo Seel-Kent, who had covered a lot of ground and found himself on the end of another flowing wave of attack.

Torrington can take great pride form their solid performance and stout tackling and particular mention goes to Dan Barrett and Reece Morgan.

Barnstaple visit Exeter Saracens this Sunday in the Devon Cup.
