This week’s South West Peninsula league round-up

APPLEDORE kicked off their Carlsberg South West Peninsula League season with a commanding 3-0 win over Alphington on Saturday.

The Fishermen put in a fine display at Marshford to get their 2014/15 campaign under way, and will hope to push on and challenge at the top of Division One East.

Second half goals from James Marsh, Mark Cann and Sam Fishwick secured the three points for Keith Shapland’s men, who entertain Newton Abbot Spurs on Saturday.

HOLSWORTHY are also off to a good start, netting seven at Penzance to chalk up a win in their first game of the Division One West season.

The Magpies endured a difficult season last year but will come into this campaign with renewed hope of a better league finish.

Will Nicholls, who scored for fun in the North Devon Gazette Football League with Bideford Reserves last year, bagged a hat-trick on his Peninsula League debut to take them top after the first round of matches.

Holsworthy have their first home game tonight (Wednesday) when they entertain Millbrook.

Premier division Witheridge kick off their league campaign at home to Stoke Gabriel next Tuesday.
