BidEFORD’s four-match unbeaten run came to an end away to Southern League Premier Division favourites Leamington, who are unbeaten at home this season.

But the Robins were far from second best in the 2-1 defeat and were disappointed not to have come home with at least a point.

Bideford travelled without the unavailable Matt Bye and the suspended Richard Groves in midfield. But they took the initiative, going in front on 25 mins when striker Kevin Squire fired home from an Ian Sampson corner for his fifth goal in four games.

Leamington levelled when Jack Furzer was judged to have handled and Richard Batchelor knocked home the resulting spotkick for a 1-1 half time scoreline.

Bideford again started brightly after the break, with Squire again making his presence felt with two good attempts on goal.

Combining well with Sean Downing, he let off a goalbound shot, only to see it cleared off the line. Then another attempt was well saved by home keeper Niall Cooper.

The tables turned when Leamington took the lead on the counter attack with a goal by James Husband and then pushed for more, with defender Aaron Harper-Penman blocking one effort on the line and keeper Paul Harper denying another with a fine save. But Squire almost had the last say, only to see his chance of an equaliser denied by the woodwork.

Bideford are due to travel to Elburton Villa in the Devon St Luke’s Cup tonight (Wednesday) before hosting Bedworth United in the league on Saturday and travelling to Frome Town on Boxing Day.
