BARNSTAPLE Town’s match against Brislington was the only Toolstation Western League Premier Division game to survive the wet weather – but Barum were left praying for rain after a disappointing first 45 at Mill Road.

Despite a promising opening 10 minutes playing against the wind, the hosts found themselves 5-0 down at the break.

But Barum put in a better second half performance to pull it back to 6-2 at the final whistle, Jed Harper-Penman scoring twice from long range, the first a 25-yard effort that nestled in the top corner of the stanchion.

Manager Tom Bulley, taking charge in only his second match, said: “We made one or two silly mistakes for their goals, two of which were penalties and one of them debatable.

“But we’ll take the positives from the performance; we came out and won the second half 2-1 and we scored two goals in a game, something we’ve only done once before this season.”

Speaking ahead of last night’s derby match against Ilfracombe Town, Bulley said his players were up for the challenge.

“We’ve been playing better football in the past few weeks and a win’s just around the corner,” he said.

Barnstaple travel to Longwell Green Sports on Saturday, while Ilfracombe are at home to Willand Rovers.
