This week’s Carlsberg South West Peninsula League round-up

Ilfracombe Town won back-to-back games in the South West Peninsula League to get their Division One East campaign up and running.

The Bluebirds only had one point going into their fourth game of the season, but a 3-1 win over Appledore last Tuesday followed by a 1-0 win at home to Liverton United on Saturday has moved them up to fifth.

Substitute Will Berry got the deciding goal on Saturday, slotting home a finish from inside the box after the ball came out to him.

“After the midweek win the lads were ready for it on Saturday. We approached it in the right way and got on the front foot,” said coach Clem Bennellick

“I think Liverton came for a point to be honest, they set up with men behind the ball and were very defensive, but I think that played into our hands as we like being on the front foot.”

The Bluebirds play Sidmouth this weekend, in what is their first away journey outside of North Devon.

“It’s nice it’s come at a time when we’ve going in really high. We’ve taken some pressure off ourselves,” said Bennellick.

After the 3-1 defeat to Ilfracombe, Appledore hosted Alphington on Saturday, drawing 2-2.

The Fishermen twice took the lead, first through Mark Thorne, then from Chris Elliot, but an injury time equaliser meant they had to settle for a point.

“We should have out of sight and it should have been over in 20 minutes,” said boss Keith Shapland.

“It’s a learning curve though, we know we’re not the finished article yet and we’ll use it as a learning experience.”

Torridgeside are up to second in Division One East after a 2-1 win over University of Exeter.

Harry Stevens gave T-Side the lead before the hosts got back on track.

Stevens missed a penalty just before half-time for the scores to stay level.

Josh Phillips sealed the three points for Barry Paine’s side with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Since an opening day draw against Sidmouth Town, Barry Paine’s side have now won three games in a row.

Paine said he was ‘definitely happy’ with the result.

He added: “It’s a really hard place to go, with the size of the pitch and the quality of their players and I think we deserved the three points.

“We played as a counter attacking team to start with, which was ideal for us.

“We went to take the game to them in the second half. Josh Phillips scored his first goal for the club to head in from a corner and after that we didn’t look like conceding.”

In Division One West, Holsworthy’s unbeaten start to the campaign continued, but they were unable to take three points from their two games last week.

On Saturday the Magpies drew 1-1 with Illogan RBL, with Chris Ward scoring the goal for the home side.

That result followed a 2-2 draw with Liskeard on Wednesday night, when Connor Nash and Adam Smith were on the scoresheet.

In the Premier, Witheridge were beaten 6-0 at Launceston, leaving them without a point from their first four games.
