This week’s Carlsberg South West Peninsula League round-up

Torridgeside followed up an impressive derby victory with another impressive win in the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League on Saturday.

T-Side sent Axminster Town back to East Devon after handing them a 3-0 defeat in Division One East.

Two goals from Marc Bettiss and one from Ollie Kenneally got Torridgeside their second win in a row, taking them up to second in the table after three games.

“We’ve had a good start to the season. To win two and draw one is pretty good,” said manager Barry Paine.

“I think personally, our keeper didn’t really have a lot to do.

“We went 2-0 up and it was a bit of a non-contest after that, we did the hard work in first half.

“I can’t ask for any more really, the lads have put in the hard work and a lot of effort.”

The win came after a 5-0 win over Ilfracombe Town last week, when a Harry Stevens hat-trick and two from Sam Fishwick gave T-Side a North Devon derby win.

Ilfracombe are still searching for their first win of the season after a 2-0 defeat to Crediton United on Saturday.

“We were excited to make up for a poor result in midweek,” said manager Clem Bennellick.

“We had good chances but didn’t take them. They scored early and I thought after that we dominated with possession but didn’t create anything clear cut.

“It’s going to click at some point. I thought we deserved a little bit more out of the game, and we were unlucky with the second goal.”

Combe will be looking to get their first win tonight (Tuesday) as they welcome Appledore to Marlborough Park.

The Fishermen picked up their first win of the season on Saturday, beating St Martins 2-1.

Two goals from Rory Barker in the first half gave the Fishermen all three points. Barker opened the scoring with a great effort, taking two players out with a turn before slotting home.

St Martins got a goal back after the break and almost equalised late on, but Appledore held firm for the win.

Manager Keith Shapland said: “We played well. We went out with a game plan to play 4-5-1 and wanted to sit back and hit them on the counter attack.

“It was different altogether from last week. We had a full compliment on the bench and options to change, and it was more like what I want for the rest of the season.

“It was 2-1, and it’s a bit disappointing we didn’t wrap the game up before. They hit the crossbar in injury time and we should have been done and dusted.”

All three teams play in Division One East on Saturday, with Ilfracombe at home to Liverton United, Appledore hosting Alphington and Torridgeside travelling to University of Exeter.

In Division One West, Holsworthy have taken four points from their opening two games of the campaign.

The Magpies came away from St Blazey with a 3-2 win on Saturday, with Tom Robinson, Adam Smith and Oaltion Arriku with the goals.

That followed a 2-2 draw at home to Plymstock United on Wednesday, when Connor Nash and Robinson scored the goals.

The Magpies are in action on Wednesday, hosting Liskeard Athletic, before another home match on Saturday when Illogan RBL visit Upcott Field.

In the Premier, Witheridge were beaten 2-1 by Callington Town on Saturday, meaning they are still searching for their first points.

Withy travel to Launceston this weekend.
