Devon and Cornwall league will restructure from 2019/20

More football teams from North Devon will be able to move up to step seven of the football pyramid by the 2019/20 season.

The South West Peninsula League has proposed a restructure of its Devon and Cornwall league system.

The league, which currently has capacity for 36 clubs across two leagues in step seven, is proposing to change the structure to accommodate three leagues with 16 teams.

A statement from the league said the new proposals would reduce travel for clubs and increase opportunities for extra clubs to play in the national league system.

The restructure means an additional 12 clubs would be needed, with the potential for two clubs from each of its feeder leagues - including the North Devon Premier.

Appledore, Holsworthy, Ilfracombe Town and Torridgeside currently compete in step seven.

The new structure means Holsworthy, who currently have to travel as far as Mousehole in Division One West, would move to Division One Central, which stretches to Liskeard and Newton Abbot.

Teams who have applied to join the South West Peninsula League for next season will be revealed in February.
