Archant

A brace of second half goals from Kevin Squire enabled Bideford to strike back for a 2-1 win away to Thatcham Town on Saturday.

Already champions, Bideford made a sluggish start and had to do it the hard way to chalk up their 27th win in 38 Southern League outings.

They fell 1-0 down by half-time after defender Sam Sawyer was penalised for a foul, conceding Thatcham a penalty which Tom Brown converted to put the home side in front after half-an-hour’s play.

But the Robins turned the tables with a much improved second half performance, led by Matt Hockley in midfield.

Substitute Sean Downing - hero with the winning goal that clinched the title the previous week - came on to supply the cross for Squire to strike home the equaliser on the hour.

He also had a part to play, along with Ian Sampson and Matt Andrew, in a good build-up that led to Squire’s winner just 10 minutes from the end.

On Saturday the Robins have their final home game against Hungerford, when they will also receive their championship trophy.
