BIDEFORD 2, CHESHAM 1

BIDEFORD came of age in the Southern League Premier Division on Saturday, treating a home crowd to their first win of the season - and handing high-flying visitors Chesham their first defeat.

With the loss of his midfield duo, skipper Matt Hockley and Matt Bye through suspension, manager Sean Joyce was forced to make changes.

He gave debuts to goalkeeper Sam Hutchings and striker Isaac Vassell, on loan from Plymouth Argyle.

And his debutants did him proud as the Robins came from a goal behind with two second half strikes to take the points.

Bideford were best for long periods, although Chesham started well, Nick Barker having to clear off his line with only two minutes gone.

In the next 15 minutes Bideford replied with shots from Richard Groves and Sean Downing.

Hutchings pulled off a super save from Chesham’s James Potton, who also struck the frame of the goal and had another shot saved, while Bideford came back with efforts from Groves, Downing and Vassell.

The second half saw Chesham come out in determing style and hit the upright.

With an hour gone the visitors’ Simon Thomas was fouled in the box and put them ahead from the spot.

But within minutes good passing play gave teenager Vassell from Newquay - nephew of former Aston Villa, Manchester City and England interstriker Darius Vassell - an opening to score the equaliser.

Chesham’s Robert Bartley then received a red card for a foul on Aaron Harper-Penman.

With 10 minutes to go, Chesham’s Danny Talbot was penalised for handling in the area and man-of-the-match Richard Groves stepped up to net the penalty matchwinner.

Last night (Tuesday) Bideford had a trip away to Banbury United and on saturday they are at home again to Redditch United.
