Rivals keep up the pace

15:31 08 January 2013

LEADERS Fremington continued on their winnings ways with a 4-0 result at home to Northam Lions.

Missed chances and some good goalkeeping helped next-to-bottom Lions restrict the leaders to 1-0 at the break, with a shot from six yards by Chris Boreham.

Substitutions and a change around 10 minutes into the second half saw Fremington take off with a hat-trick from Andy King to secure their 11th league win in 12.

Close rivals Torrington also chalked up their 11th win with a 4-0 result at home to Park United.

They, too, should have scored more and their current missing of chances was something that could come back and bite them, warned club spokesman Nick Taffs.

After failing to convert several earlier opportunities, Torrington went ahead midway through the first half with a good 18-yard strike from Danny Jenkins.

Five minutes before the break and Jenkins was brought down in the box. He took the spotkick himself, but it went straight to the keeper.

Although Torrington were on top, Park also had their spells and could have got back on terms before Jenkins hit a second goal midway through the second half.

But the game was still not safe until George Bartlett broke clear to slot the ball under the keeper for number three. This allowed Torrington to ring the changes and new signing Arlo Reddick from Putford celebrated his debut with a goal on his first touch of the ball after the Park keeper could only parry a Jenkins shot.

Park continued to battle to the end, but without reward.

Combe Martin stay third after a close battle with bottom team Ashwater, who are gaining increasing respect from the teams above them.

It took Combe 20 minutes to get into the game, but they then took the lead through Richard Watkins and hit the woodwork a couple of times before the break. Carl Power made it 2-0 before Ashwater pulled a goal back midway through the second half to keep the result in doubt to the end.

Shooting boots

Lynton and Lynmouth had their shooting boots on to start the New Year with an emphatic 9-0 win at home to a South Molton side they had beaten only 1-0 on their previous encounter.

It looked like the same old story in the first half as a number of good chances went begging and South Molton had their fair share of the play.

The first half hour was a scrappy affair as “rustiness” and a heavy pitch played their part. But CJ Roberts opened the scoring with a fine finish after spurning an earlier chance and it stayed 1-0 until the 35th minute. Then Max Smith, who had also missed a couple of good chances, scored twice to make it 3-0 at the break.

The second half was became one-way traffic Smith added two more goals his fourth a superb effort as he brought the ball down with his chest with his back to goal on the edge of the box before turning and hitting a left-footer into the top-corner. Sandwiched between came goals from Tommy Mirow, Dave Eastman and a second for Roberts. With 90 minutes on the clock Roberts got behind the defence again to complete his hat-trick.

Referee Gary Sluggett was given plaudits from both teams for his handling of a match in wet conditions between Woolsery and Merton.

Woolsery took the points to stay in the top four with a 4-2 win in a close match decided in the second half after pulling away from a 2-2 half-time stalemate.

Nathan Delaune hit both the Merton goals while Woolsery were helped by a brace of own goals off the unfortunate Richard Luxton.
