Manager quits after seven months in charge of the Evo-Stik League South West club

Richard Pears has stepped down as manager of Barnstaple Town.

The club confirmed that Pears had resigned following Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Cirencester Town in Evo-Stik League South West.

The defeat was Barum’s 12th in 19 games in League South West. They currently sit second from bottom with 13 points – taking three from their last nine games.

Assistant managers Kevin Darch and Dave Griffiths will carry on as caretaker managers until a new manager is found, starting with Saturday’s trip to Larkhall Athletic.

A statement from club chairman Jasmine Chesters said: “It is with sadness that Richard Pears has offered his resignation as the manager of Barnstaple Town Football Club and I have accepted it.

“Richard so wanted the team to do well under his leadership but feels that it is not happening. He is stepping down to make way for someone else to bring the side together to make all of the supporters proud of their team again. He wishes all of us success in the future.

“I would like to thank Richard for the tremendous hard work he did on behalf of the Club.

“He made great efforts trying to bring a virtually new side together and win games for us.

“I will be earnestly looking for new manager and hope the players will stay loyal to the Club in the meantime.

“We will come out of this stronger, more focused and ready to win matches. I would like to thank BTFC fans for their support now and hope that it will continue in the future.”

Pears was appointed in May, leaving Exmouth Town to take over from outgoing manager Barry Yeo, and was quickly tasked with rebuilding the Barnstaple squad.

Niall Heeney and Jed Harper-Penman were the only players from the 2016/17 season to remain at the club as many of the core squad left for the likes of Bideford and Bridgwater Town.

An ever-evolving side has enjoyed just one win at Mill Road in League South West - a 4-0 win over Paulton Rovers in September.

Speaking on Twitter, Pears said: “Loved every minute of Southern League football and have made two life log (sic) friends in Griff and Darchy - so it was really worth it.

“Thanks to everyone who supported me and sorry to let you down.”
