Bideford AFC Youth coach’s contribution recognised with ‘community coach of the year’ and ‘outstanding contribution to sport’ awards

BIDEFORD AFC Youth Head Coach Pete North has been named ‘community coach of the year’ and was also awarded the prestigious ‘outstanding contribution to sport award’ at this year’s Devon Sports Awards.

Pete was both delighted and surprised to have won the awards.

“I am overwhelmed; I was genuinely not expecting to win the community coach award with so many worthy candidates,” he said. “When it came to the final award and Jenny (Walrond) was reading out the citation, I began to realise that they were talking about me!

“To win the outstanding contribution to sport award is incredible. I am certain that it recognises not only what I have managed to contribute, but also the success of Bideford AFC Youth in providing opportunities for young people.”

The Exeter Foundation Devon Sports Awards were held at Exeter Chief’s home, Sandy Park, last Friday.

The event was hosted by BBC Spotlight’s Jenny Walrond, with special guest Kriss Akabusi.MBE.

“Well done and congratulations,” said Jenny. “This is for all of the things that Pete has done in the community with football - I am sure that you all agree that this is well deserved.”

Olympic medallist Kriss Akabusi was full of praise for Pete and had some encouraging words for his club.

“Bideford AFC Youth, you have had a brilliant year, it’s phenomenal.

“You know each day and every day that Pete is there working hard, and today he has been recognised, twice he came up, he’s the man!”
