WITHERIDGE pulled off a fantastic FA Cup win on Saturday, winning by a goal to nil at local rivals Barnstaple Town.

Barnstaple dominated for large parts and even had an extra man for the majority of the second half, but Witheridge were clinical and took their chance when it came - something Town could not match.

This was Peninsula League Witheridge’s first-ever FA Cup tie, and one they are unlikely to forget in a hurry thanks to Jack Langford’s winning goal on the hour mark.

They looked nervy in the opening exchanges, as Barnstaple settled in and kept the ball but were largely unable to create any clear-cut chances.

But Town, who have promotion aspirations in the Western League this season, could not make them count and had to go in all square at half time.

Around 200 watched at Mill Road, and were even more confident of a home win when Witheridge were reduced to ten men.

Ibbeson was the man to see red, sent off for a two-footed challenge.

That almost seemed to spur Withy on to greater heights, as impressive striker Jordan Charran saw his side’s first real chance cannon back off the post.

And it was Charran who set up Withy’s goal just moments later, as he broke clear and squared for Langford to knock it in from 10 yards.

10-man Witheridge then had to batten down the hatches as Town threw everything at their local opponents, but they could not find a way through as Withy secured a famous win.

Barnstaple play Portishead Town away on Tuesday night, before a weekend home game against Westbury United.

Witheridge face Stoke Gabriel on Tuesday in their first league game of the season, with a trip to Bovey Tracey next Monday evening.
