Football club offers supporters’ group unique chance to play at Premier League stadium
MEMBERS of the North Devon Spurs Supporters’ Club have been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to play on the hallowed turf of White Hart Lane.
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club invited supporter clubs from around the globe to play in an ‘Asia v Rest of the World’ 11-a-side football match last week, with the North Devon supporters’ club allowed to take four players along with them.
They were not short on applicants from their 70 members – but the quartet of club secretary Guy Cable, Jamie Ford, Paul King and Kevin Payne were the final four, chosen to represent the Rest of the World XI. Paul was even made captain of his side.
“The whole day from beginning to end was schoolboys’ dream time,” said Guy. “We had ex-spur legend Cliff Jones and Rob from the youth academy as our management team.
“We were shown to the dressing room where our kit was laid out and generously donated by one of the club sponsors AIA insurance, and also brand new football boots for us by Under Armour.
“We had our team talk and sorted out who was playing where, and from there we were led into the tunnel for the walk out onto the pitch.
“Everyone had the time of their lives out there.”
The Rest of the World team ran out 6-1 winners on the day, and were later presented with medals by ex-Spurs players Cliff Jones and Graham Roberts.
“We were watered and fed and looked after all day by Tottenham Hotspur, it was a great day to cherish,” said Guy. “Roll on the next one where more of our members can enjoy the experience.”
