Ilfracombe climb out of bottom two with win over Radstock

ILFRACOMBE climbed out of the Toolstation Western League relegation places with a convincing 4-0 win over fellow strugglers Radstock Town.

The Bluebirds were boosted by the addition of a number of players for the match, with Bideford’s Kevin Squires and Stephen Reed again joining up and Jordan Charran and Danny Tapp making the step up from the Peninsula League.

Squires formed a new strike partnership with Witheridge’s Charran, and the pair proved a constant threat all night.

Combe came out of the blocks well and were ahead after five minutes, when Lewis Murrell volleyed in his first goal for the club after good closing down from Squires.

But the injury curse struck again soon after, with Murrell forced off 10 minutes later and replaced by assistant manager Kevin Darch.

Charran’s pace in behind was causeing the Radstock defence real problems, and after two good save from the visiting goalkeeper kept him out, he was left with the simple job of tapping in Squires’ pass.

Radstock looked up for it in the second half, putting Combe under far more pressure than they had been able to muster in the first period.

But the back four and ‘keeper Kurtis Parkin withstood it and Charran smashed in his second of the game with a fine effort from 25 yards.

Charran then capped off his man-of-the-match performance with an assist, returning the favour and offering up a simple chance for Squires.

The 4-0 win lifts Combe out of the bottom two, with a game in hand on the sides directly above and below them.

“It was a great result,” said Ilfracombe manager Ross Middleton. “This was a must-win game and the lads were brilliant.

“The players coming in were a massive help with all our injuries. It was great to have that sort of experience in the side.

“Jordan (Charran) was brilliant and his pace in behind gave us an out-ball all night long. He was the difference.”

Ilfracombe cannot afford to get too carried away, though, sitting just a point above the relegation places ahead of another big game at Slimbridge on Saturday.
