Ilfracombe in repeat of their Jekyll and Hyde act

PUBLISHED: 17:09 11 December 2012

Ilfracombe town put in another Jekyll and Hyde performance away to Odd Down on Saturday resulting in a 3-2 loss.

Combe never got going in a lacklustre first half performance and were punished with two goals before the break by a strong Odd Down team.

Sandwiched in between, Combe created one golden opportunity, a free kick was hung up, Craig Allan out jumped the keeper and Edd Yeo’s volley was cleared off the line.

Combe came flying out of the blocks in the second half - the attackers started putting defenders under pressure, the midfield were biting into tackles and the back four looked more like the solid defence of a week earlier.

It didn’t take long to get the goal they deserved. After a succession of corners the ball found Tom Rossiter who crossed for Edd Yeo to head home his ninth of the season. Combe kept up the pressure and went in search of an equaliser, but both Karl Baggeley and Edd Yeo had good efforts thwarted by the keeper.

Just as it appeared it was only a matter of time before Combe scored they were hit with a killer blow as Odd Down made a rare break and a shot deflected off James Mayne wrong footed Steve Oliver for an own goal. Combe kept fighting and set up a frantic last five minutes, when substitute Steve Holland finished well to bring the score back to 3-2.

Manager Ross Middleton said: “The lads were livid with themselves at half time, I came into the changing rooms and a few of them were ripping shreds out of each other, which I love to see, it shows they care and want to win. Great credit to the team, as they came out fighting and were excellent in the second half. Their keeper made a couple of amazing saves and the own goal just sums up our luck. We’ll keep fighting though and the lads will be looking forward to another big test on Saturday, away to top of the league Brislington.”
