Girls win the county cup

17:20 24 April 2012

North Devon girls have featured in two county cup finals, carrying off the under-16s cup and coming runners-up in the under-15s.

Barnstaple under-16s were 4-3 winners after extra time in their final against Kingskerswell.

Barnstaple were the underdogs, but in front of a 200-strong crowd they took an early lead through Harriet Macey and remained in control for the opening half-hour.

Kingskerswell hit back with two goals just before half time to lead at the break, but Barnstaple made a strong start to the second half with two powerful runs and good finishes by Louisa Cappoci within 10 minutes put them back in front 3-2.

The South Devon side had a penalty attempt strike the bar before pulling back level five minutes later to take the game into extra time.

Both sides contributed to some fine competitive play in the extra period, with the game seemingly heading for penalties before an indirect free kick five minutes from the end found Harriet Macey, who netted the matchwinner.

Bideford under-15s were also worthy finalists, but found opponents Ashmore just too strong, losing 4-0.

The game was closer than the scoreline suggests, but reflected Ashmore’s fine shooting.
