Frome Town 2-0 Bideford

Bideford slumped to their second defeat of the week on Wednesday night as a trip to struggling Frome Town proved an unexpected banana skin.

Bideford were boosted on a wet evening in Frome by the return to the starting line-up of winger Sean Downing, and after a quiet start created their first real opening of note after 20 minutes, when Craig Duff headed over from close range.

There were very few other incidents of note in an even first half apart from a brawl which broke out on the half hour mark after a late challenge on Frome’s Woods.

Just 167 came out to watch in-form Frome take on the Robins, and they must have thought they were going to see the opening goal of the game in the 59th minute when Graham Mercieca raced through only to fire wide.

And two minutes later, Bideford were made to pay for their wastefulness as the referee awarded the home side a penalty when Bideford ‘keeper Steve Oliver brought down Frome forward Thomas.

Miller stepped up to convert for the home side, who came into the game 18th in the Calor League Southern Premier division, to give them a surprise lead.

Bideford pressed for an equaliser but were undone again 10 minutes later when Baggridge turned the ball in after the Robins failed to clear a long throw.

A second defeat in a row leaves Bideford fifth in the Premier division, with a number of teams below them now having games in hand.

The Robins will hope to get back to winning ways when they entertain Burnham on Saturday.
