PREMIER

BOCA Seniors moved within three points of league leaders Braunton in the Premier division of the North Devon Gazette Football League with a thrilling 6-3 win at Torridgeside on Saturday.

Boca have been in hot pursuit of Braunton for much of the season, having had games in hand on their rivals for several months.

As it stands, Braunton have now completed their 30 games season, with Boca three points and three games behind.

They were made to work hard by outgoing champions Torridgeside on Saturday, who scored through Harry Stevens (2) and Kyle Paine.

But four goals from in-form Elliot Whitecross – he scored seven against Shebbear last week – plus a Matt Deakin strike and an own goal proved enough to keep Boca on track for the title.

Their next test comes tonight, when they entertain Torrington, knowing that a win would leave them only needing one point from their final two games.

They could then wrap up the title when they travel to sixth-placed Fremington on Saturday.

Ilfracombe Town Reserves recorded the Premier division’s biggest win of the weekend, putting 11 past bottom club Chittlehampton.

Brady Sanders, Cassian Blackmore, Charlie Prentice and Ray Squire all bagged braces for ‘Combe, while Jordan Alcock and Ryan Welch also scored with an own goal rounding off the scoring in an 11-2 victory.

Ilfracombe now sit 10th in the table, and finish their campaign on Saturday with a trip to Torridgeside.

Bradworthy enjoyed a mixed weekend, losing comfortably to North Molton on Saturday before coming up with a fine win over Barnstaple AAC a day later.

North Molton’s goals came from Daniel Chalk, Michael Humphreys and Ryan Turner in a regulation 3-0 win.

But Sunday’s game proved to be a different story altogether, as Bradworthy flew out of the traps at home to an Ammies side still then entertaining thoughts of a top three finish.

Those hopes were quickly dashed by the home side, whose goals came from Gary Clarke (2), Matthew Carter and Daniel Furse.

Oliver Rigler got one back for Barnstaple AAC but the damage was already done.

Torrington lost for a fourth time in six outings as they fell to a 3-1 defeat at Shamwickshire Rovers on Saturday.

Only a few weeks ago, Torrington looked nailed on for a third place finish, but now find themselves under serious pressure from Bideford Reserves as the number of games left to play ticks down towards zero.

They face a difficult task to win their penultimate game, at Boca Seniors tonight (Wednesday).

Appledore Reserves are up to seventh in the table after beating Georgeham and Croyde by three goals to two.

Appledore are without a game this weekend, ahead of their final game of the season at Chittlehampton later this month.

Georgeham still have three games to play as they try to hold off Chittlehampton and avoid finishing bottom of the pile, having still picked up just seven points all season.

SENIOR

PARK United continued to reel in long-term leaders Braunton Reserves with another convincing weekend win.

Park reduced the gap to eight points with a 6-1 win at Ashwater on Saturday, while Braunton did not play a league game again this week.

Park still have four games in hand on their title rivals, who only have one game left to play, and know that four wins from their final five matches would be enough to secure the Senior division crown after spending much of the season playing catch-up.

But it won’t be a trophyless season for Braunton Reserves, who beat Shamwickshire Rovers Reserves to win the Braunton Challenge Cup.

Braunton claimed the cup with a 2-0 win at Mill Road on Sunday, after disappointment last week in the Combe Martin Cup final.

Landkey Town put themselves back into pole position to claim third this season, with two wins over the weekend strengthening their claim – scoring 16 in the process.

They followed a 7-2 win at Northam Lions on Saturday with a 9-4 win at Combe Martin the following day.

Saturday’s goals included a Joe Gillard hat-trick, plus strikes from Toby Bennett, Steven Eggleton, Russell Shaddick and Harrison Worley.

Landkey are now three points ahead of Barsntaple FC, although they have played three games more than the other side contesting third.

Woolsery look to be a shoe-in for fifth place after a 2-1 win over North Molton Reserves on Saturday.

They still have four games remaining, but are unlikely to bridge the gap to the teams above them or come under threat from the sides directly below them.

They could, however, still have a say in where this season’s title goes, as they entertain Park on Saturday.

Barnstaple FC kept their good form going with a 3-2 win over Putford on Saturday.

Until a midweek thrashing at the hands of Park last week, Barnstaple had won nine games in a row in all competitions, and returned to winning ways thanks to goals from Ryan Isaac, James Maynard and Tom Nash. James Ashton and Chris Pomeroy found the net for Putford.

At the bottom, Combe Martin edged ahead of Torridgeside Reserves into 14th with a 5-4 win at bottom side Morwenstow Reserves.

Both sides have struggled for goals this season, so a nine-goal thriller came as a real surprise.

Torridgeside slipped into the bottom two after defeat to South Molton.

They were beaten 2-1 through James Campbell’s and Josh Hicks’ goals, with Drew Sullivan netting for the visitors.
