Ashton and Backwell United 0-5 Barnstaple Town

BARNSTAPLE Town signalled their promotion intentions with a thumping 5-0 opening day win at Ashton and Backwell United.

Town are top of the league and hoping to stay there after cracking five past Ashton, who could not cope with Barnstaple’s pace and cutting edge.

Dave Pearse got Town off to a perfect start, with last season’s top scorer Billy Tucker opening his account in spectacular fashion to double the lead before half-time.

Barry Yeo’s side continued to push on in the second half, with Ryan Turner netting to make it three.

Pearse doubled his tally for the day before midfielder Lee Francis completed the scoring with a well-struck effort.

Barnstaple play their first home league game of the new season tonight (Tuesday), when they hosted Wincanton Town at Mill Road.

They face Witheridge in the FA Cup on Saturday, also at Mill Road.
