Combe Martin strike again

COMBE Martin continued their purple patch, chalking up league and cup wins for a second weekend in a row.

They opened with a 4-1 league win at home to Northam Lions, taking a 2-0 interval lead through Simon Townsend and Carl Power, while the Lions were denied a reply by the keeper’s legs.

Combe stretched their lead to 4-0 with further goals by Townsend and Richard Watkins before the Lions started to press in the final 25 minutes and clawed one back with a good goal by Ben Brend.

Next day Combe got the better of Senior Division leaders Torrington in the Holman Cup 4-2 after extra time. This followed the previous Sunday’s extra time Braunton Cup success at the expense of second-placed Fremington.

Simon Townsend put Combe 1-0 ahead at half-time and Cassian Blackmore made it 2-0 soon after the re-start.

Northam Lions also played two weekend games, drawing 1-1 at home to North Molton Reserves on Sunday. The Lions goal came from a Robbie Crump penalty and Colin Welch netted for Molton.

A Torrington side comprising a mix of first and second team players replied quickly through Dan Jenkins and when a late foul gave them a free kick Jenkins stepped up to knock it home in the closing minutes to force extra time.

But Combe struck again through Joe Seldon and Townsend for the extra time win.

Torrington maintained their lead in the league, however, with a comprehensive 9-0 win over Pilton Academicals the previous day.

After taking 20 minutes to get going Torrington moved into top gear to race home with four goals from Jenkins and others by Kai Dymond (2), Harry Taffs, George Bartlett and Ross McNicholas.

Braunton Reserves also saw double action at the weekend, both games in the league.

They were 4-2 winners at home to Bude Town in a game that saw the sides level 2-2 at the break and that remained close until Braunton pulled away with two second half goals.

Steve Burley (2), an own goal and Dan Roberts gave Braunton their win.

Next came a clash with second-placed Fremington and another close game that was only decided by a single Fremington goal midway through the second half.

Attacking fullback Josh Hooper celebrated his call-up for duty in the absence of Simon Larcombe with a top display, rounded off with a fine run before laying the ball to Andy King to score the winner.

“A good, hard-fought game, played in good humour,” was the verdict of both team managers.

Fourth-placed Woolsery were taken by surprise away to bottom team Ashwater, falling 2-0 behind before coming back to draw 2-2 with goals by Josh Johnston and Jack Smallridge.

South Molton and Merton fought out a six-goal stalemate that was close throughout.

Both teams were after the three points, but one was enough to take South Molton out of the relegation zone.

Molton were twice in front only for Merton to equalise each time. Then Merton went ahead and it was Molton’s turn to draw back level. Josh Hicks, Turlough Adley and Will Palmer scored for Molton and Nick Ward, Nathan Delaune and Sam Davey for Merton.
