BIDEFORD gave a better account of themselves in their second visit to AFC Totton this season, but the result was the same, another 2-0 defeat.

This time it meant an exit from the FA Carlesberg Trophy at the hands of a team who are in the top half of the Southern League Premier Division.

Manager Sean Joyce had reshuffled his side.

With Dominic Rivans and Rob Farkins both suspended, Jack Furzer took control at the back.

Steve Orchard was also mising, sitting exams, while Matt Bye and James Richards were on the bench.

Sean Downing was back in action and in came Nick Barker and Ian Sampson.

Debutant Matt Rickard, who has come through the Plymouth Argyle youth setup, also played the last 20 minutes.

Bideford fell behind after only seven minutes when James Coutts found the net, with the help of a deflection off Furzer.

But the Robins went on to dominate possession and create a hatful of chances, only to be denied by the woodwork and a man-of-the-match display by home keeper Gareth Barfoot.

As the Robins pushed forward, Matt Andrew’s header was denied by the woodwork, Kevin Squire saw another well saved and Downing shaved a post in the first half.

Soon after the break Totton doubled their lead with a curling Ryan Hill free kick.

But still Bideford pressed, a shot from Furzer hitting the post and Barker sending a cracking header against the crossbar.

Aaron Harper-Penman’s shot from the edge of the area was stopped by the Totton keeper and so, too, was a stoppage time effort by Connor Clifford.

There were plenty of positives and plenty of opportunities for the Robins, but in the end, there was no cigar.

Bideford have an early start and a long trip to Bedford on Saturday. Rivans, Farkins and Orchard will all be re-available
