Chippenham Town 2-4 Bideford

BIDEFORD responded to two straight league defeats with a fine performance and a 4-2 win at Chippenham Town on Saturday.

The win keeps Bideford in play-off contention, sitting sixth and level on points with Stourbridge above them – although they do now only have seven games left to play.

Bideford burst out of the blocks and were ahead after five minutes through Owen Howe.

Howe was on target again in the 35th minute, sending the Robins in with a two-goal advantage at half time.

Matt Hockley swiftly added a third in the 48th minute and when he made it a brace in the 74th minute his side were four goals to the good and cruising.

Some of the sheen was taken off the win in the closing stages, as Dean and Griffin scored in the final moments for the hosts.

The day might have been even better for Hockley, too, who saw his second half penalty well saved as he came up just short of a memorable hat-trick.

The trip to Chippenham also marked the debut of central defender Chris McGrath, who performed solidly alongside Nick Milton at the heart of the Bideford defence, and may well have seen out a clean sheet on another day.

But it was a vital three points for the Robins, who have played considerably more games than a number of the teams around them but are still in with a good chance of creeping into the play-offs.

Their promotion credentials will be further tested on Wednesday night, when they travel to fourth-placed Cambridge City.
